The Battery That Actually Strands You

Storing an electric car is not storing a petrol car with the fuel section deleted. A parked Lucid Air is still awake: the thermal management system is protecting the high-voltage pack, the telematics are reporting, and both are drawing power. State of Charge Is the Whole Decision

Lithium-ion cells degrade fastest at the extremes of their charge window, and the damage compounds with temperature. Stored at a high state of charge in heat, the cathode sits under sustained electrochemical stress and calendar ageing accelerates. Stored near empty, you risk the pack dropping to a level where the management system will not permit a normal charge at all.

The Number to Leave It At

Roughly half. Set the charge limit to 50 to 60 percent before the car goes in, and store it somewhere the ambient temperature is not fighting you. The general protocol is in storing an EV battery long term.

The Air’s advantage is also what makes ambient temperature matter more than owners expect: a 500-mile-class pack is a large thermal mass, and keeping a large thermal mass within its window in 115°F ambient means the cooling system runs. At 50 to 70°F it essentially does not have to.

The 12-Volt Battery Is What Strands You

This surprises people. The high-voltage pack can be in perfect health and the car still completely dead, because the low-voltage system is what wakes everything up — contactors, computers, door handles. On many EVs the 12-volt battery is topped up from the main pack only when the car decides to do it, and a car left untouched for months can flatten the small battery while the big one sits at 55 percent.

A flat 12-volt on a modern EV is not a jump-start-and-go situation. Door handles may not present, the charge port may not open, and access to the 12-volt terminals is often awkward by design. Every bay at REVCity runs a maintainer on the low-voltage system, which is the single most useful thing you can do for a stored EV and the thing most storage arrangements ignore entirely.

The distinction between a maintainer and an old trickle charger matters here as much as on a combustion car — constant current cooks plates, float charging does not. The chemistry differences are covered in AGM versus lithium.

The Glass Canopy and the Cabin

The Air’s Glass Canopy roof is one of the largest single pieces of glass fitted to a production car, and it sits directly over the occupants. It is coated and it is effective, but glass area is glass area: parked in open Las Vegas sun under a UV index of 10 to 12, the cabin behind it heats faster and further than a metal-roofed car’s, and it heats the interior materials from above rather than through the windscreen alone.

Upper dash and shoulders
The surfaces directly under the canopy take the heaviest UV and thermal load. Crazing there is not polishable out.
Nappa and textile trim
The Air uses a lot of soft trim and natural-fibre textile. Dry Mojave air at 10–15 percent RH hardens it; REVCity holds 40–50 percent.
Screens and adhesives
Large bonded display assemblies do not enjoy repeated 160–190°F cabin cycles; delamination at the edges is the tell.
Tyres
A 5,200 lb saloon on staggered fitments flat-spots readily. Lift storage removes the load. Why it happens.

None of the interior damage is insurable. Gradual heat and UV deterioration is excluded from essentially every policy as wear, so preventing it is the only available strategy.

What Actually Degrades a Pack, in Order

Battery degradation gets discussed as if it were one thing. It is two, and only one of them applies to a car that is not moving.

Calendar ageing is the one nobody can avoid entirely, but its two controllable inputs are exactly the two that storage decides: the temperature the car sits at, and the state of charge you left it at. Get both right and a long sit costs the pack very little. Get both wrong — 100 percent charge in an uncooled Las Vegas garage through July — and you are paying for the storage decision in range for the rest of the car’s life.

Why This Is Not the Same as a Tesla Conversation

The Air runs a higher-voltage architecture than most of the field and a physically large pack to reach its range figures. A larger thermal mass takes longer to bring back into its window once it has soaked, which makes stable ambient temperature worth more here than on a smaller-battery car.

Does the Glass Canopy roof make heat damage worse?
