Nissan GT-R Storage in Las Vegas

The VR38DETT, the GR6 dual-clutch transaxle, and a 12-volt system with a reputation for going flat. Here is what Las Vegas heat does to a GT-R that sits, and how REVCity stores one properly.

The R35 GT-R is one of the least forgiving performance cars to store badly. Its GR6 dual-clutch transaxle carries fluid that degrades with heat cycling, its 12-volt system has a documented parasitic draw that flattens a battery in weeks, and its run-flat tires have stiff sidewalls that take a set faster than a conventional performance tire. REVCity Auto Storage, 7185 Bermuda Rd, Las Vegas NV 89119, stores GT-Rs at 50 to 70°F and 40 to 50% relative humidity on BendPak 4-post lifts with a quality battery tender connected. Why a GT-R Punishes Bad Storage Harder Than Most

Every stored car suffers the same general insults — heat, UV, humidity swings, a dead battery, flat-spotted tires. The GT-R converts each of those into a more expensive repair than the average performance car, because of three design decisions Nissan made in pursuit of the lap time.

The GR6 Transaxle
The dual-clutch, rear-mounted transaxle shares its housing with the rear differential and runs a specific fluid under high shear and high thermal load. That fluid oxidizes with heat cycling even when the car is not moving. A transaxle service is a genuine four-figure job, and a GT-R that has sat hot on old fluid is a GT-R that will shudder on the 1-2 upshift the first time you drive it hard.
The Parasitic Draw
The R35’s control modules do not fully sleep the way a modern OEM system does. Owners consistently report a flat battery in three to five weeks of sitting. A flat battery on a GT-R is not just an inconvenience — low voltage during a crank attempt can throw transmission and ABS faults that require a dealer-level tool to clear.
Run-Flat Sidewalls
The factory Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600 and the Bridgestone Potenza RE070R both run reinforced sidewalls. Reinforced construction is stiffer, which means it resists deflection under normal load and then holds a flat spot longer once it takes one. On a set of $2,400 tires that is a real number.
Carbon Ceramic on Nismo Cars
Nismo GT-Rs carry carbon ceramic rotors. Ceramics do not rust like iron, but the pad material bonded against them in high humidity will transfer unevenly and the caliper pistons will seize in a damp, uncontrolled space. Storage humidity is not optional on these cars.
The Value Case

Hagerty, the leading collector car insurance authority, tracks R35 GT-R values as firming rather than falling, and the earlier Skyline generations have moved decisively upward — R34 GT-R V-Spec cars now trade well into six figures as they clear the 25-year import rule. A GT-R is no longer a depreciating performance car you park in a hot garage. It is an appreciating asset with a documented maintenance record attached to its value.

What 115°F Does to a GT-R Specifically

Las Vegas peaks at 115°F in July and August, with 310-plus sunny days a year and a UV index of 10 to 12 from May through September — the extreme classification. A closed garage without conditioning tracks well above ambient, and a car parked outdoors reaches an interior temperature of 160 to 190°F in direct sun.

ComponentWhat Heat DoesRepair Cost
GR6 transaxle fluidOxidizes, loses shear stability, causes clutch shudder$1,800–$4,800 service
Dual-clutch packWears fast on degraded fluid; slips under launch load$2,400–$5,500
12V batteryDegradation roughly doubles per 15°F increase in temperature$280–$450
Run-flat tiresFlat-spotting and compound hardening$2,000–$2,900 per set
Bilstein DampTronic dampersSeal hardening, weeping, lost adjustability$1,600–$3,400
Alcantara steering wheel & trimUV fade, adhesive release, fiber matting$900–$2,200
Paint (Midnight Opal, Bayside Blue)Clearcoat oxidation, metallic flake dulling$4,000–$18,000 refinish
Intercooler and radiator hosesRubber hardening, cracking at clamp points$600–$1,400

Midnight Opal deserves a specific warning. It is a multi-layer paint with a chromaflair-style pigment, it was a five-figure factory option, and no independent shop matches it easily. Sustained UV exposure dulls the flake and hazes the clear, and the correction path is a full panel refinish that will not match the adjacent panels. A car with that paint has no business sitting outdoors or in a hot garage in this valley. The same mechanism we document on our Las Vegas heat damage page applies here with an unusually expensive outcome.

How REVCity Stores a GT-R

The storage protocol is not generic. A GT-R gets handled around the three failure modes above, and the facility environment does the rest.

50–70°F, Year Round
The transaxle fluid, the damper seals, the intercooler hoses, and the battery all degrade on a temperature curve. Holding a stable 60°F rather than cycling between 70 and 130°F is the single highest-leverage thing you can do for the car.
40–50% Relative Humidity
Controlled humidity keeps iron rotors from surface-rusting between drives, keeps caliper pistons free, and keeps the Alcantara and leather from either drying out or absorbing moisture. Climate control reduces corrosion risk by up to 90% compared to an uncontrolled space.
BendPak 4-Post Lift
Every space includes a BendPak 4-post lift. The car sits with its tires unloaded, which eliminates flat-spotting on those stiff run-flat sidewalls entirely, and the underbody sits clear of a slab that radiates heat and moisture.
Quality Battery Tender
Not a trickle charger — a proper multi-stage maintainer that reads state of charge and floats correctly. Given the R35’s known parasitic draw, this is the difference between driving the car when you arrive and waiting for a jump and a fault-code clear.
UV-Free Enclosed Facility
No glass, no skylights, no direct sun on the paint. The Midnight Opal problem, the Alcantara problem, and the dash-crack problem all disappear when the photons never reach the car.
24/7 Monitored Gated Access
Continuous monitoring and controlled gated entry. GT-Rs are a documented theft target, and an R35 sitting in a residential driveway or a self-storage yard is exposed in a way it is not here.
Storage vs Self-Storage

A standard self-storage unit is a concrete box with a roll-up door. It offers no humidity control, no lift, no tender, and no temperature floor or ceiling in a valley that swings from 28°F in January to 115°F in July. It is worth reading our page on climate-controlled versus temperature-controlled storage — the two terms are used interchangeably in advertising and they are not the same product.

Preparing a GT-R for Storage — The Checklist

Run this in order before the car goes in. It takes an afternoon and it protects a six-figure asset.

StepWhat to DoWhy It Matters
FuelFill to ~95% with premium; add Sta-Bil 360 or PRI-G before filling, then drive 20 minutesPrevents oxidation and ethanol phase separation
Engine oilChange it before storage, not afterCombustion acids and moisture in used oil attack bearings while parked
Transaxle fluidService if over 30,000 miles or three yearsDegraded GR6 fluid causes clutch shudder on the first hard drive
CoolantVerify strength and conditionWeak coolant loses corrosion inhibitors and attacks the aluminum block
TiresInflate to placard pressure, then store on the liftUnloaded tires cannot flat-spot
BrakesClean and dry; do not set the parking brakeA set parking brake on a stored car can bond the pads to the rotors
BatteryConnect a multi-stage maintainer, not a trickle chargerCounters the R35’s parasitic draw
InteriorRemove all food, wrappers, and paper; dry the cabinRodents nest in stored cars; wiring repairs run four figures
Wash and sealWash, decontaminate, apply a sealant or check ceramic coating conditionDirt and brake dust etch clearcoat over months
DocumentationPhotograph the car and log the odometerHagerty recommends storage documentation for agreed-value claims

One deliberate omission: do not start it monthly. A cold start that never reaches operating temperature condenses water into the crankcase and exhaust and dilutes the oil with unburned fuel. On a dual-clutch car it also cycles the clutch actuator hydraulics without warming the fluid. Prep the car properly, then leave it alone until you are going to drive it for real.

Skyline Generations — R32, R33, R34

The 25-year import rule has put a growing population of legally imported Skylines into the Las Vegas Valley, and they store differently from an R35. These are older cars with older materials and, in most cases, a significantly higher value per unit of condition.

GenerationEngineStorage Priority
R32 GT-R (1989–1994)RB26DETTOriginal paint preservation; period rubber and seals are brittle and heat-sensitive
R33 GT-R (1995–1998)RB26DETTCeramic turbine wheels are fragile; fuel system and injector condition
R34 GT-R (1999–2002)RB26DETTHighest values; original Bayside Blue paint and unmolested interior drive the price
R35 (2007–present)VR38DETTGR6 transaxle fluid, 12V parasitic draw, run-flat flat-spotting

The RB26 cars share a specific vulnerability: nearly all of them have spent time in a humid Japanese climate, then a shipping container, then an American garage. Original paint on an unmodified R34 is a substantial fraction of its value, and it is exactly what 10-to-12 UV index sunlight destroys. If you have imported a Skyline into Las Vegas, the storage decision is not a convenience question — it is a preservation question with a five-figure consequence.

FAQ

Common Questions

Where can I store a Nissan GT-R in Las Vegas?

REVCity Auto Storage at 7185 Bermuda Rd, Las Vegas NV 89119 is the valley’s purpose-built climate-controlled facility for exotic and collector vehicles. GT-Rs are stored at 50 to 70°F and 40 to 50% relative humidity on BendPak 4-post lifts with a quality battery tender connected. Call 725-272-1803.

How long can a GT-R sit before the battery dies?

Three to five weeks is typical for an R35 without a maintainer. The car’s control modules carry a documented parasitic draw, and Las Vegas heat accelerates battery degradation — it roughly doubles for every 15°F increase in temperature. A multi-stage battery tender, not a trickle charger, is required for any storage period beyond a couple of weeks.

Do GT-R tires flat-spot in storage?

Yes, and faster than most performance cars. The factory Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600 and Bridgestone Potenza RE070R use reinforced sidewalls that hold a set once they take one. Storing the car on a 4-post lift with the tires unloaded eliminates the problem entirely.

Should I change the GT-R transaxle fluid before storage?

If the car is over 30,000 miles or three years on the current fluid, yes. GR6 fluid degrades under heat cycling even while parked, and degraded fluid is the leading cause of clutch shudder on the first hard drive after a long sit. A transaxle service runs $1,800 to $4,800 — less than a clutch pack.

Is climate-controlled storage worth it for a GT-R in Las Vegas?

Yes. Las Vegas peaks at 115°F with a UV index of 10 to 12 for five months of the year. Climate control reduces corrosion risk by up to 90% and extends interior lifespan by up to 50%. Against a car whose paint alone can be a five-figure refinish, the storage cost is small.
