The Corvette has been a composite-bodied car since 1953, and that is the single fact that should shape how you store one in this climate. Fibreglass and, since the C5, sheet-moulded compound expand and contract at roughly twice the rate of the steel or aluminium structure underneath them. Every heat cycle works that joint. Composite Panels on a Metal Structure

Every Corvette ever built pairs a non-metallic body with a metal frame — hand-laid fibreglass on the chrome-bumper cars, SMC and carbon on the modern ones, bonded and bolted to a steel or aluminium structure. The two materials have meaningfully different coefficients of thermal expansion, so on a hot day the body grows faster than what it is attached to.

A closed Corvette parked in Las Vegas sun runs a cabin at 160 to 190°F against an overnight low that can be sixty degrees cooler. Do that ninety times across a summer and the bonded and bolted joints work through a large number of differential cycles. What owners notice afterwards is panel fit: a door that sits proud at the top corner, a hood gap that has gone uneven front to back, a rear fascia edge that no longer lines up. On the chrome-bumper cars it also shows as stress cracking in the gelcoat around bonded seams.

Removable Roof Panels Are a Separate Problem

Every C5 through C8 has a targa panel and a compressible weather seal. Left clamped in place through a hot summer, the seal takes a permanent set and stops sealing — then the first monsoon storm in July finds the gap. Store the panel in place but check the seal condition, and keep the car somewhere the temperature does not cycle it.

The Transverse Leaf Spring, and Why Lifting Matters Here

Corvettes have used a transverse composite leaf spring rather than coil springs since 1981. It is a fibreglass laminate, and like any spring it is happiest cycling rather than sitting statically loaded — but the practical storage issue is what it does to the tyres in combination with the car’s weight distribution.

Fuel, and the Problem With Older Corvettes

A C1 through C3 has a steel tank and a fuel system built decades before ethanol was blended into pump petrol. Nevada sells E10. Ethanol is hygroscopic, it phase-separates over time, and the water it drops out attacks the steel tank from the inside while the ethanol itself goes after period rubber and any zinc in the system.

On a carburetted small block, phase-separated fuel will varnish a float bowl solid across a single summer. Treat the tank before the last drive so the additive actually circulates, use PRI-G rather than a light stabiliser if the car is sitting past a year, and never drain a steel tank to store it — an empty steel tank rusts internally the first time monsoon humidity arrives. The modern cars are less fragile about fuel but not immune. A C8 left on a part tank of untreated E10 through a Las Vegas summer is starting a clock, and the direct-injection system is not cheap to put right.

The interior row is the one insurance will not touch. Gradual heat and UV deterioration is excluded from essentially every policy as wear, which makes it an engineering problem rather than a claims problem — worth confirming with your own carrier.

What Changes Generation to Generation

Seventy years of the same nameplate covers wildly different cars, and the storage priorities move with them.

C1–C3 (1953–82)
Hand-laid fibreglass, chrome brightwork, steel tank, carburettor. Ethanol is the primary enemy and the gelcoat is the fragile part. Humidity control protects the chrome; fuel treatment protects everything else.
C4–C5 (1984–2004)
Digital dashes that fail permanently after heat soak, and pop-up headlight mechanisms with grease that hardens. Both are heat problems, and both are hard to source parts for now.
C6–C7 (2005–19)
Run-flat fitments with stiff sidewalls that hold a flat spot, and on the Z-cars, summer compounds that will not tolerate a static season. Interior plastics of this era craze readily under UV.
C8 (2020–)
Mid-engine layout with a rear glass panel over the engine bay, more electronics that stay awake after shutdown, and staggered fitments that load the rear tyres hard when parked.

What all of them share is a composite body on a metal structure and a cabin that reaches 160 to 190°F in open sun. The generation only changes which symptom you see first.

Does a fibreglass body need different storage than a steel car?

Yes. Composite panels expand at roughly twice the rate of the steel or aluminium structure they are attached to, so every heat cycle works the bonded and bolted joints.
