It is the swing that does the damage rather than the peak. Thermal cycling fatigues adhesives, seals and bonded trim; it drives the daily expansion and contraction that shifts panel fit on composite-bodied cars; and combined with humidity that sits between 10 and 15 percent, it hardens hide and crazes dashboards over a single season. Southern Highlands sits at the southern edge of the developed valley, which brings two things worth naming. The first is exposure: less mature tree cover than the older communities, and long west-facing elevations that take the afternoon sun directly. The second is dust. The perimeter is open desert, and blown silica etches clearcoat rather than simply sitting on it.
The community’s own protections work against you here as well. Guard gates and an HOA are excellent for security and poor for a collection: covenants in master-planned communities commonly restrict what can be parked on a driveway and for how long, which pushes everything into the garage and makes the garage the constraint.
The distance is the objection, and it is smaller than it looks. Twenty minutes up the 15 puts the car in a sealed, monitored building at 50 to 70°F and 40 to 50 percent humidity, on a four-post lift with the battery maintained — four things a five-car garage in Southern Highlands does not provide at any price.
